12 x 2024: A Zine Series

This page is dedicated to the zine project known as “12 x 2024”, in which I (Emily Weston) self-publish a photo-poetic zine on a monthly basis all year long.

Each edition has a unique tone reflective of the time in which it was created- seasons, politics, and personal events all impact the language and show up in the photographs. Launched in response to the extreme financial circumstances created by the Hollywood Strikes, 12 x 2024 utilizes the language of film in a way that doesn’t require thousands of dollars to practice it - after all, books, like films, are a time based medium, and these editions use language and image to provoke, inspire, and connect, just like a good movie.

BOOK 1 : STEALING VANILLA

The first edition, published mid January of 2024. It wasn’t until after this one was completed that the idea for the series formed.

BOOK 2: A SNOWDRIFT OF ANARCHISTS

The second edition- the flooded streets of New Orleans, Mardi Gras from inside a box, and notes on invisibility and rage.

BOOK 3: DUBIOUS CARTOGRAPHY

Featuring photographs from a road trip in March 2024 to Texas to see the total solar eclipse, Book 3 toys with the format and leans into the photography.

BOOK 4: TO THE WHORE WHO WRITES MY POEMS

The central subject of Book 4 revolves around a major surgery on my spine. This edition is rife with multiple types of self portraiture in both direct and meta ways. This is the first edition to shift to landscape.

BOOK 5: THIS IS THE PLACE

I spend a lot of time thinking about Marshall Mcluhan’s Medium is the Message and riding the New Orleans Streetcar.

BOOK 6: ODES

An exploration of how other people are conduits for ourselves. Community.

BOOK 7: PROLETARIAT BLONDE

A dissection of super ego as it relates to religion and pop culture through an amazon printed “Book of Hours”.

BOOK 8: THE CONE OF UNCERTAINTY

The photos included in this edition were taken in the days immediately after New Orleans was hit by Hurricane Francine, using a mix of spherical and anamorphic cine lenses which create a vignette that has been left untampered with to heighten the mood of the zine.

BOOK 9: I LIKE MONEY AND MONEY LIKES ME

Shot with a cine lens resulting in a 2.35:1 letterbox style aspect ratio, I LIKE MONEY AND MONEY LIKES ME is a psychological anti-capitalist romp through the streets of New Orleans at night.

BOOK 10: GYRE

Gyre is a reflection on being stuck, turning over the same old ground, but also, revolution, momentum, cycles. A moment of collecting thought before springing into action.

BOOK 11: REJECTS

Book 11 of 12 is a year in review - a look back at images that didn't make the cut the first time around. These are my rejects.

BOOK 12: TWELFTH NIGHT

The final issue features Behind the Scenes photos from the short film "Henpecked" and poems about memory and the incel mindset, Twelfth Night is moody and stylish and the product of collaboration with other brilliant artists including Selwyn Figg, Taylor Perry and Rayshaughn Armant.
